About Sophia

My approach is grounded in being personable, efficient, and tailored to individual needs. When we are struggling with academic studies, there can be an underlying cause, such as anxiety about the assignment or a misaligned approach that is hindering progress. By talking things through with you in detail, I aim to understand barriers to learning as well as help you to better understand the assignment, topic, and what needs to be done.

About the lesson

I have been tutoring since 2014 and have helped many students achieve academic success. I hold a First Class BA in English from the University of London, an MA with Distinction in Modern and Contemporary Literature from the University of Sussex, and a PhD from Loughborough University.

I have previously worked as an English lecturer and have four years of professional research experience in the topics related to health, social care, cultural heritage, arts, and education studies at top UK universities and through freelance consulting.

I offer three main types of support -

1. Support for university research projects and modules: I can support students working on projects and module assignments in several areas, such as English Literature, Art History, Cultural Studies, Fashion, Media Studies, Sociology, and Education Studies. I am a qualitative researcher with broad experience, so would be keen to hear from anyone in need of support with projects in these areas or others.

2. Proofreading and editing: I can support with general proofreading, grammar, and editing. Having written for academic and general audiences, I have broad expertise in writing. I am particularly skilled in minimising word counts without losing substance.

3. Support for English Literature exams at GCSE and A Level: I have tutored dozens of students at GCSE and A Level and can offer guidance with analysis, unseen texts, coursework and preparing for exams.

My approach to tutoring is personal and holistic, addressing the subject matter and assignments at hand but also offering study tips and techniques that might help you thrive as an individual. I seek to get to know each student, understand what the challenges are, and work together to find solutions, joy in learning, and ultimately a great academic result.

Lessons tend to be one hour but can vary in length depending on needs. Please contact me to explore your needs.
