About the lesson

My teaching style is collaborative and largely student-led. I see myself as a guide, rather than a dictator. I want my students to enjoy the process of learning, and to incorporate what they’ve learned into their daily lives, since that is how we find meaning in the world around us.

About Shawna

I am a published writer, a former kindergarten teacher, an award-winning writing and English language tutor, and mom to two brilliant writers, both of whom I taught to read when they were still in preschool. I come from a family of award-winning writers and journalists, and I began writing my own pieces as soon as I was able to hold a pencil. I am patient, kind, fun, and very talented at explaining complicated ideas in easily understood language, to anyone of any age. I love helping people learn to express themselves logically, easily, and with confidence. My students don’t just memorize the rules of English. My students learn why the rules work the way they do, because rote memorization doesn’t provide understanding, and the goal of all learning is understanding, and by extension, incorporation into one’s daily life. Once they know the rules, my students learn when it is acceptable to break the rules, so they can grow to develop verbal and written communication styles that are effective, persuasive, and uniquely their own. We all have something to say, arguments to make, and stories to tell. I will help you say your piece, argue your case, and tell your story with style, and eloquence.
