About Gannon
In today's fast-paced and competitively driven academic landscape, the role of a tutor has become more significant than ever. Students, often overwhelmed by the pressures of coursework, exams, and extracurricular commitments, seek guidance to help them navigate their educational journey. As a tutor, establishing professionalism is not just a matter of personal pride in my opinion; it is essential for inspiring confidence and legitimizing your role in the eyes of the students you serve. First impressions matter. As your tutor, my demeanor, appearance, and communication style all contribute to the initial perception of my professionalism. I will arrive on time, dressed appropriately, and will always maintain a friendly yet respectful tone. It’s crucial to create an environment where students feel safe and supported, but also recognize that they are in the presence of someone who takes their role seriously. An essential element of professionalism is effective communication. I will be clear from the beginning about my teaching methods, expectations, and goals building a transparent relationship with students. This clarity can alleviate anxiety, as students know what to expect and how to measure their progress. I do encourage questions, listen actively, and provide constructive feedback. By fostering open lines of communication, students will feel valued and understood, cultivating a strong tutor-student rapport. Legitimacy as a tutor stems largely from qualifications and experience. I have 16 years experience in the English classroom ranging from Grade 6 to Grade 12, remedial courses, as well as Advanced Placement courses. I was invited to speak at a conference in Chicago which pertained to working with students below the national reading average and how to get their scores on or above grade level. I was invited to speak at this conference for 3 years in a row in which ended up being a great success all 3 years. I also was invited to a conference in San Francisco and spoke on the same topic for 2 years in a row. Not only have I taught in the English classroom, but I have also taught drama, journalism, and oral communications. I'm experienced in working with students with grammar, test preparation, understanding literature, as well as remedial reading. I've worked with students in preparing thesis statements as well as complete essay writing. I have taught everything from Charles Dickens to Shakespeare to Amy Tan and even Twilight. I have taught in both the public and private school sectors, as well worked with students on all levels, meeting that student where he/she was to have the most impact on his or her learning. Just as I encourage my students to grow and learn, it’s vital for myself to commit to ongoing professional development. I attend workshops, participate in online courses, and engage with professional organizations related to education and tutoring. I am dedicated to enhancing my skills and staying updated on teaching trends and methodologies. I will establish a structured learning environment, enhancing professionalism and instilling confidence in students. I will set clear objectives for each session and outline the topics to be covered. I will make use of syllabi when appropriate, lesson plans, and assessment tools to create a framework that guides the learning process. As I believe feedback is a mutual responsibility between tutors and students, providing regular and constructive feedback helps students understand their strengths and areas for improvement, fostering a growth mindset. Likewise, inviting students to reflect on their learning experiences and share feedback about my tutoring methods can lead to adjustments that enhance effectiveness. This collaborative approach not only boosts students' confidence in their abilities but also reinforces their trust in my abilities as a tutor. role as a tutor.
