WRITERS WRITE: Now let's learn how to do that. For writers, the only thing that matters is writing. Writing is thinking, and thinking takes time. Getting published? It's a goal, but it's not the only

About Mike
I have published two books with big houses: Random House; and John Dunne, St. Martins. One book with a small press in Massachusetts - Eastwood Road Press. A book of poems with Eastwood. I have sold several screenplays to directors and producers in LA. I spent a month working for and with Madonna (and she was a very pleasant woman). I have written for actors and lawyers and doctors. I've received several offers to option my two books. I've suffered the significant iniquities, the ambitious greed of a bad agent. I remain in close contact with producers who call to order up a book or screenplay. I became a successful writer. There's no instant answer, solution. It takes time. There's little explanation for American writers like Fitzgerald or Faulkner. (Discuss Hemingway as a special case.) Sometimes the stars align and some of us live up against the malleable and porous border between the conscious and collective unconscious. How to explain Faulkner? One might as well try to explain Mozart. And yet thousands dream of becoming writers, working writers, published writers, respected writers. One possible obstacle is when the novice seeks the identity (writer) in favor of the function (writing). The first is a good response or revelation for cocktail conversation, but it's for the self-regard of appearance, meaningless. The second is the function, the substance, the thing itself. It's function performed in private, with little if any support. It's not glamorous or an entree to opening nights or wine and cheese parties at Grove with memories of Beckett. It's work. The work you have chosen. I know. I've been through it and I can guide you through much of it. Let me tutor you.

I spent forty years writying 500 - 1000 words per day. I wrote through every set back , every compliment, every ooooh and aaaah. I wrote in Boston, New York and Hollywood. But it starts with a noun and a verb. It starts with a sense of 'clause placement' andthe consequent effect on sound and rhythm. It clears the false effects of adjectives, the parasitic nature of adverbs. It begins with point of view (1st person, 3rd person or 'Bright Lights' 2nd person, omniscient, restricted, ). It begins with time: present tense, past tense. And it beins, in the beginning lessons, with x-ray of a sentence, followed by an x-ray of a paragraph. It's like this: I have spent considerable time on every step necessary to climb from unlimited desire and no talent to desire and an acclaimed prose stylist. Can it be learned? YES. Let me help you learn.
