About Brooke
I spent three of the four high school years mastering advanced creative writing classes. Although there wasn’t a particular class for essay writing, the demand was in every class. Taking a forensic science class? After case studies, most teachers will ask for an expository essay about what you retained from the module and what it looks like when broken down piece by piece. Social study classes require analytical essays to simplify and explain what took place in specific events or historical actions. Even art-based courses aren’t safe from the dread of essay construction; descriptive essays are used to visualize artwork or vividly describe experiences. When I started applying for jobs without prior work experience, I knew it must have been the impressive cover letter I had crafted. I endured the same anxiety, not thinking I had enough background, when submitting applications to colleges. I didn’t play an instrument, obtain as many community service hours and wasn’t an athlete. I knew very well my college essay had to be creative, well-constructed and eye-catching enough to substitute for whatever else I lacked compared to my peers. Every single one of the colleges I sent the essay to accepted me in a few weeks. (I can include Oxford commas if requested, but I personally don’t find it necessary.)

I have plenty of techniques to provoke the stuck, creative mind. There are many fun ways to spike new ideas and plot points for your next piece! If creative writing isn't a struggle, adding character to academic work can be difficult. Having a personality that shines through even in boring essays and documents is a deciding factor in giving applicants the attention they deserve. Nowadays, it's increasingly challenging to stand out among those who can play an instrument, individuals with extensive community service hours, or those who have excelled in their sport.
