Since I work more as a coach than as an instructor, I work with the student to help him or her develop the topic, theme or hypothesis for the essay or research paper. Then we work through the stages of turning that topic into an essay or paper that can be submitted with an application or to a teacher. Those stages may include free writing, research, building a bibliography, multiple drafts, editing, final review, and final draft.
I have been a tutor off and on for over 30 years. Recently, I have worked with high school students as a volunteer writing coach. I have worked with a Ph.D. candidate to develop her dissertation. Having my own Ph.D., I have experience developing and writing lengthy academic papers. Over my years as a professor, I have worked with individual students to improve their papers and their writing.
As a volunteer writing coach, we left the students with a college essay that could be further refined as needed during the early part of the school year. Let me also note that I have been an interviewer for an Ivy League university for more than 25 years, so I have a good grasp of what colleges are looking for.
The Ph.D. candidate I worked with had a idea for her history dissertation, but had not been able to shape it into something that her committee found appropriate for a dissertation. She had done a lot of research, and had a story to tell, but had not developed a clear hypothesis that that story could demonstrate. I helped her develop her hypothesis and turn her story into a dissertation that was accepted by her committee.
I reserve the right to charge for mileage if I am traveling beyond the Hartford metropolitan area.
