About Maria
Hello! My name is Maria
I am of Greek heritage but was born and bred in South Africa,
My educational background is in line with my passions and interests. These involve professional make-up artistry, photography, film and Media, English language and literature, as well as psychology and yoga.
I have a TEFL certificate which I obtained in Thailand in 2017 - that is when my teaching journey began. After my TEFL training, I went on to living and working in Asia, both in Thailand and in Singapore for a few years.
My personal journey studying and the period of relocation abroad in Asia signified the coming of a deeply meaningful period in my life – defined by significant psychological transformations. I am so grateful for the opportunities this gave me to explore other countries, nationalities, religions and traditions and for the privilege it gave me to work with children and teens in diverse environments
My teaching experience is varied as I have worked with age groups ranging from kindergarten, primary and high school students throughout my time teaching in Asia.
In my most recent role, I was responsible for preparation of a teaching curriculum following a reggio-inspired (inquire, think, learn) programme - aiming to make children feel competent in solving problems via challenging play.
I am also quite familiar with the Cambridge IGCSE curriculum as I was exposed to it when working as a high school teacher in Thailand. In addition, I have some experience training students to write the IELTS examination.
In my home country (South Africa), I worked with adults, delivering daily English language, conversation & grammar classes to pre-intermediate/ pre-elementary and elementary level students (from various backgrounds).
I have taught at local and international schools, as well as at a language centre and have performed private lessons from students in their homes, upon request.
Apart from English, I also speak Greek and a bit of Afrikaans. This equips me to be accepting and understanding of my students. I understand how daunting it can be to learn a new language. This takes lots of patience and practice. But it does not have to be scary and should be made fun and empowering if real learning is to take place.
What I love most about teaching English is that it aligns with my desire to make a difference. I love witnessing students in an 'aha'-moment, whereby a new word/ concept finally clicks! It is great being a part of that learning process and I have all the patience in the world to walk that journey with students who are eager to learn.
As I have various teaching experience, I can offer much flexibility in the kinds of classes I offer (for example grammar-based lessons or conversational classes) I am open to tailoring my lessons/ teaching methods or materials to fit my students particular needs or requests.
My knowledge in Psychology has been beneficial in helping me understand and meet my students needs. I can understand and relate to multiple experiences and perspectives. Furthermore, my travel and work experience equip me for work in a field which involves interaction with diversity.
