About Briony

Hi, my name is Briony and I am a Bachelor of Science from Newcastle University and a SEN specialist. Prior to becoming a full-time tutor, I used to work as a science teacher in an alternative provision therefore have a wide range of experience in additional educational needs like ASD, ADHD and many more. I think a key attribute that was key for me working in a provision was my patience and empathy understanding that I may need to explain a topic slower and repeat explanations multiple times to support the learning of the student. I am wanting to pass on these skills now to my tutor students now I am currently a full-time tutor. Having achieved 9s in Science, 8 in Maths and in A level Biology and AS level in Core Maths, I can provide personal experience of going through the 9-1 GCSE system and also I have a wide range of national curriculum resources for my tutor lessons. Furthermore, I have been tutoring for nearly 3 years now and I have gained a subsequent amount of experience teaching KS2, 11 plus, adult learners and KS3 too. Plus, I offer tutoring in A level Psychology and Physical Education too. My main hobbies are weight training, boxing and cooking.

About the lesson

My preparation of my lessons would include PowerPoint, worksheet/ exam questions and an optional clip of the topic to watch. I am a strong believer in interactive lessons. Therefore, the student and I will both have time to draw on the whiteboard, think of questions for each other and feedback for each other at the end of the lesson. I feel if the student can not only answer questions of the topic but also make questions and mark them correctly that is when they have a strong understanding of the topic. However, I tailor the lesson exactly to the student's likes, dislikes and needs. Again, I have experience of doing this from my years of tutoring but also working as a teacher in an alternative provision. I measure progress with exam papers and mind maps. I encourage learning by making lessons as fun and relatable as possible! For example, if there is a sport the student likes I will always try to link the work to their sport if possible as I believe this aids learning and memory.
