About Tom
I am a Politics, Philosophy and Economics student at the University of York, with strong GCSE and A-level results and over two and a half years of experience as a private tutor. During this time, I have worked with a wide range of students, supporting both those who have been struggling and those aiming to achieve higher grades.
I am particularly interested in how students think, understand, and express their ideas, and I focus on helping them develop the skills needed to succeed across multiple subjects, especially in essay-based disciplines. Parents and students value my clear explanations, patient approach, and ability to break down difficult concepts into understandable steps.
My aim is to provide professional, supportive, and high-quality tutoring that leads to real improvement in both confidence and academic performance. I take pride in helping students make meaningful progress and in creating a positive, focused learning environment.

My lessons are focused on helping students develop clear thinking, strong written communication, and effective exam technique in English and humanities subjects. I work with both students who feel behind and those aiming to move from average or good grades to top grades, by teaching them how to structure essays, build strong arguments, and respond precisely to exam questions.
With over two and a half years of tutoring experience, I use a structured, step-by-step teaching approach that breaks complex tasks into manageable, repeatable methods. This helps students understand what examiners are looking for and how to consistently produce higher-mark answers, rather than relying on guesswork or memorisation.
Lessons are typically one or two hours (depending on what works for you) and are fully tailored to the student’s level, goals, and areas for improvement. I place strong emphasis on confidence-building, clarity of expression, and independent thinking, so students become more secure and capable in their work over time.
My lessons are suitable for students aged 9–16, including GCSE, 11+ and 13+ preparation, as well as students who want to strengthen their general academic skills and exam performance.
