About Sam
I am an experienced, meticulous and motivating full-time London tutor. My priority is not only to help you understand and enjoy the material you bring to me, but to teach you tools for finding answers yourself long into the future.
I graduated from Cambridge University with a Double First in English, and will begin a Master's in Psychology in September. I tutor in English Literature, English Language, History, Latin, Spanish, Maths, Non/Verbal Reasoning, and Interview Technique.
I am highly familiar with 11+ Exams and Common Entrance, having taken them myself, as well as GCSE and A Level (in which I scored 10 A*s and 5 A*s respectively). Exam technique is an art in itself, and there are plenty of general approaches we can learn to make them easier and less stressful.
Difficulties in learning are usually emotional as well as intellectual – as frustration builds, confidence falls, and both can cloud the mind. I value patience and gentle psychologically-informed suggestions to create a safe and inspiring space in which we can remove those mental blocks together. I draw on professional experience as a classroom assistant and special educational needs teacher in Spain, where I lived for a year.
I am based in North West London, but can travel across London. Please do email me if you would like to arrange a phone call. I will gladly supply a CV upon request, and a longer document explaining more about my approach to sharing my love of learning.
ENGLISH
•Primary/prep school to undergraduate level.
•English is my first expertise. The wide range of topics you might bring to me span from reading comprehensions to creative writing; grammar rules to rhetorical devices; essay technique to making sense of dense poetry.
HISTORY, LATIN
•Primary/prep school to A Level.
•The fundamentals of critical thinking and essay writing apply to all humanities. I was just as strong (if not stronger) in History and Latin at A Level, and happily teach these subjects too.
MATHS
•Primary/prep school to GCSE.
•I didn’t always find Maths easy, and so am especially attuned to ways of making it more accessible. I’ve seen some of my best success teaching this subject.
SPANISH
•Primary/prep school to A Level (though I’ve helped undergraduates too).
•Living in Spain, I became highly fluent. I love teaching Spanish and specialise in speaking skills (from accent work to native phrasing).
INTERVIEWS
•School entrance; university/Oxbridge entrance.
•At Cambridge, I worked with academics to give instructive performances and bespoke advice at open days, taking pride in building prospective applicants’ confidence. Attitude and appetite are always as important as aptitude.

Sam tutored my daughter for GCSE Maths and also helped her with some English. He is clearly a very bright young man but also well-organised, kind and reassuring when teaching. My daughter had always struggled with Maths and Sam gave her real confidence and as well as an interest in the subject. She particulary enjoyed his sense of humour - which always helps when it comes to Maths!!
Sam gave me enormous help with English language and literature at Cambridge. He is an extraordinary editor, spotting every little grammatical or stylistic error I'd made in my writing, and explaining his suggestions clearly and gently. He also gave me a love of poetry and analysing complex literature that I'd never have had without him. He is continually encouraging, patient and fun as a tutor. I would recommend him to anyone who wants to love what they are learning.
I’ve known Sam as a friend and colleague at Cambridge University for several years and rarely have I met someone with such a knowledge of English literature and history; and he also excels linguistically, particularly in Spanish (having lived in Spain) and Latin. He is a committed tutor who considers his students' needs and adapts his teaching as necessary. His joy and enthusiasm is effervescent and he is able to get his students enthused as well. I cannot recommend him highly enough.
