About Jonathan
Hello! Great to meet you.
I've been tutoring since 2019, and I bring more to a session than just a subject I know well. I'm an Engineering student at Northwestern University with hands-on research experience across three university and industry labs, and a track record that includes presenting original findings to judges. I've also served as a Teaching Assistant for Fluid Mechanics at Northwestern, so I understand not just the material, but how it's actually taught and graded at the university level.
What that means for you: sessions that are organized, dependable, and built around real understanding. I show up prepared, I communicate clearly, and I take your (or your child's) progress as seriously as I take my own work.

I diagnose, then build. Every new student starts with a quick, low-pressure assessment so I can see exactly where the gaps are before I decide what to teach. From there, I work concept-first, formula-second: in chemistry, biology, math, and physics, students get into trouble not because they can't do algebra, but because they're plugging numbers into equations they don't actually understand. So I build the intuition before we ever touch the formula.
Once the concept clicks, we move to active problem-solving. We talk through it together, I ask questions that nudge rather than answer, and I let them get stuck just long enough to learn from it.
A Typical Lesson
First 5–10 min: Quick check-in
Next 10–15 min: Introduce the new concept through a worked example, building intuition before formalism.
Next 20–25 min: Guided practice. We start with problems close to the example and work toward ones that require them to combine ideas on their own.
Last 5–10 min: Recap the key takeaway in one sentence, assign a short practice set, and preview what's next so the material never feels disconnected session to session.
What Sets Me Apart
Most tutors can explain a concept. Fewer have actually used it. I'm a Chemical Engineering student at Northwestern with hands-on research and industry experience. I'm not reciting a textbook, I'm drawing on work I've actually done. I've also been a Teaching Assistant for Fluid Mechanics at the university level, so I know firsthand how professors structure problem sets, what they're actually grading for, and where students predictably get stuck.
The other piece is communication. A recurring theme across my work is taking something complicated and making it click for the person in front of me, whoever they are. That's the actual job of tutoring, and it's the part I've had the most practice at.

I work across a range of levels: younger students building a foundation in chemistry and biology, high schoolers and college students working through math and science coursework, and college students tackling chemical engineering classes like thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and mass/heat transfer.
