About Evangel

Hi, I’m Evangeline, and I’m excited to help you start coding! I’ve been teaching programming for 7 years, and 5 of those have been live online. I earned my Ph.D.-level training in scientific computing alongside my chemistry doctorate, building Python programs to analyze large research data sets, and I also hold an M.S. in Data Science from the University of Rochester. I hold the Python Institute PCAP and AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner certifications and completed Code.org’s teacher training for K-12 computer science. I worked for two years as a data scientist at a research software company, building Python tools and machine learning models for lab data. I’ve taught introductory programming and data analysis as an adjunct instructor at Tompkins Cortland Community College, coached a high school robotics team and mentored students in a free after-school coding club. I’m proud of a nine-year-old who built a Scratch game about the birds in her backyard, of a high schooler who made a bird-sighting chart for her school’s science club and of an adult career changer who finished a portfolio of three working projects. Students tell me I’m patient, sharp and make coding feel exciting.

Hello and welcome! I teach coding from kindergarten through 12th grade, plus college and adult learners, starting with Scratch and block coding for young beginners and moving on to Python, JavaScript, HTML/CSS and Java for older students. I also teach SQL, data analysis, charts and the basics of machine learning, and families come to me for a school coding class, AP Computer Science, a data or science project, a contest or robotics team, a college intro course, a portfolio for applications or a skill for work. If your language or topic isn’t listed, message me and I’ll tell you honestly how I can help. Lessons are live and one-on-one on Zoom or Google Meet with screen sharing. I explain one idea, we write real code together, and then you take over while I guide you with questions. I also teach students to use AI coding tools wisely, by asking for explanations, testing every answer and checking that the result is really correct. Ithaca is home to a world-famous bird research lab, so our signature project is the Bird Sound Detective. You use free bird-sighting data to chart which birds visit your area through the year, and older students try a simple machine learning model that sorts bird types. You can turn any project into a Mini Research Project with a poster, and I’ll help you build a Portfolio Page of your work. Once a month, we hold an Ask the Scientist chat about careers in science and tech. I teach in Eastern Time with early and evening slots for other US time zones, and a parent stays nearby for younger students. You need a computer with internet, and I’ll help you set up a free tool in the first lesson, while younger learners can start on a tablet.
