About Joanna

Hi! My name is Joey Kieran-Mendez, and I’m passionate about helping students find their voice through writing. I’m currently a student at Penn State University majoring in Health Policy and Administration, with experience in neuroscience research, public health, and academic writing across a wide range of disciplines. In our sessions, I’ll help you strengthen your writing skills—whether you need support with homework, essay organization, or proofreading. I believe that every student learns differently, and I’m here to meet you where you are. My teaching style is collaborative: you tell me what you want to work on, and we’ll tackle it together, step by step. What sets me apart is not just my academic background, but my lived experience. I developed a learning disability at a young age, which made things like spelling and processing classroom lessons difficult. I know how frustrating learning can be when it doesn’t come easily—and that’s exactly why I’m committed to helping others. I’ve been in your shoes, and I’ll work with you patiently and respectfully to help you grow. Outside of academics, I’m a researcher, entrepreneur, and freestyle skier—so I understand how important it is to balance focus with creativity. Whether you’re preparing for college-level work or trying to improve day-to-day assignments, I’ll help you build confidence, one lesson at a time.

About the lesson

Every student has a unique writing style, along with their own strengths and areas for growth. In our lessons, I’ll focus on helping you with your homework and providing detailed feedback on your writing. My teaching style is collaborative—you let me know what you'd like to focus on, and together, we'll work toward your goals. A typical lesson involves reviewing your work, highlighting what you’ve done well, and walking you through any corrections or improvements. What sets me apart: As a young girl, I was diagnosed with a learning disability that made it difficult to process what my teachers were explaining, especially when it came to spelling and writing. Because of that experience, I’m deeply committed to supporting anyone who needs extra guidance. I know what it feels like to struggle, and I’m here to help you succeed. Who I teach: K-12, those who want to improve their creative writing or essay skills
