About Paul

I love educating people. Whether they are students in a classroom, athletes in sports programs, or personal training clients, I have always gravitated towards sharing my knowledge with others to help them attain their goals.

I have worked as a 6th grade English Language Arts in the ELizabeth Public School system for three years. The school community is comprised of a diverse student population, which has provided me with invaluable experience when it comes to personalized instruction. I also make efforts to establish strong interpersonal relationships with my students. Such relationships promote trust and highlight investment not just in the student's education, but the student as a person. Additionally, these relationships also reveal interests and motivations that can be used to help your child attain their goal.

As your child's tutor, I will help them attain their learning goals through individualised instruction, focusing on reading comprehension and writing skills that will not only help them in academic settings, but also increase their interest in reading and writing for personal entertainment.

I majored in English (teacher education) at Ithaca College. I received my bachelor's degree in 2016.

I am a New Jersey State certified teacher. I possess a standard certificate that is up to date. I have three years experience teaching ELA in the Elizabeth Public School system. I have experience educating youths and adults in the capacity of personal trainer and coach.

I believe in goal setting. This informs my understanding of a student's current skillset and the progress they need to make to attain their learning goal. I also like to take time to learn about the student on an individual level. What can be revealed in these conversations are interests and motivations that can assist in attaining the learning goal.

From there, I map out the steps that will need to be made to reach the learning goal. This includes developing a timeline that illustrates how progress will be made between the initial meeting and attainment of the learning goal.

Find a teacher who exhibits patience. Most teachers (one way or another) are knowledgeable in their area of study. But not all of them will exhibit patience. When study sessions are running smoothly, both the student and the teacher will be in high spirits. But what happens when you are stumped or struggling with a question? In these situations, a teacher needs to know how to be patient, to think of new ways for you to solve the problem, and to guide you along at a pace that is comfortable for you.

On a recent trip to the Trailside Nature and Science Center located in the Watchung Reservation, my students and I had the opportunity to hike along a trail that ran throughout the reservation. During the hike, we came across a manmade dam. My students (who live in the city of Elizabeth) misidentified the dam as a waterfall and began taking pictures and voicing their excitement over what they were seeing. This was an enlightening experience: in that moment I gained a new perspective on my students, gaining insight into the things I take for granted in my own life that they may hardly ever see. To see something as simple as a dam have such a profound effect on my students reinforced my belief that getting to know your students (especially their life outside of school) can positively impact interactions between students and teachers.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
First ask yourself, "Have I used all my resources?" Too often students will give up too quickly without consulting all the resources available to them. Double check texts and notes and make sure the answer isn't there. Next, make sure your question is specific. "I don't get this," isn't very informative. A more specific question, such as, "I don't understand what this word means," helps the teacher identify what your specific need is and how they should approach the issue.
