About ERICA

I have over 17 years of teaching experience, focusing on Reading, Writing, and developing literacy skills in general. I hold a master's degree in Education and have worked in public, private, and international schools around the world. My experience with students of all ages has given me the tools to reach students of all levels and to encourage a love of literacy through gentle guidance, research-based instruction, and encouragement.

For me, working one-on-one with students gets to the true heart of teaching. I enjoy learning exactly what each student needs, and being able to tailor my instruction accordingly. With individual tutoring sessions, I love being able to see more rapid progress than in the classroom, and developing a relationship with the student to encourage and support is extremely fulfilling.

I have 17 years of experience working with students and adults, with a focus on literacy instruction. I have a Master's degree in Education, and have worked in public schools, private schools, and international schools in five countries. I have been a Literacy Coach at an international school, and helped train teachers in literacy instruction and methodologies. I have attended multiple trainings at Teachers College in New York with Lucy Calkins, which has guided my philosophy of reading and writing instruction throughout my career.

My teaching experience in these diverse settings helps me understand the varying needs of students no matter where they come from, and gives me a unique understanding of the difficulties students face when they need additional help and support outside the classroom.

English

When beginning work with a new student, I generally spend half of the first session asking questions and getting to know the students' interests and goals for us working together. After that, I assess students' strengths and weaknesses according to the work we'll be doing together, so I get a better idea of where to start and how I can meet the student exactly where he/she is academically and emotionally.
