About Jessica

I am a political scientist with a minor in communications who has worked in the world of real estate, finance and public relations/marketing. I was Founder and CEO of the San Diego Coffee Network LLC after writing about local coffee in San Diego and doing events around local roasters. SDCN was the ultimate social advocate for local coffee in San Diego helping put San Diego on the map as a coffee city. My team of writers and organizers built a community and culture that is still going strong to this day. In 2016, the city of San Diego gave us a proclamation for our work in growing the local coffee industry that was recognized through our local media. I have real world experience writing everything from Press Releases to articles for political and life style magazines. I have experience editing and mentoring burgeoning writers as well as running successful social media campaigns. If you want to improve your writing, or just need a second look, I'm happy to take a look and offer some points for improvement. I'm currently on track to transition into becoming a full time substitute teacher locally in Kennewick as I now have a young son who will be in school full time soon. I'm tutoring to gain more experience working with grades 8-12 in writing and civics. I can also be a wealth of knowledge on study skills for just about any subject.

I've always been a mentor in anything I've done from real estate to finance to being a business owner. I want to teach because it allows a flexibility I need for being a mom, and it is rewarding and a privilege to see people learn and grow.

I graduated in 2003 from Western Washintong University with a Bachelor of Science and Arts in Political Science with an empahasis on Law & Government as well as Comparative Politics. The degree program was writing intensive. In addition, I earned a minor in Communications. I tutored friends where English was their second language, shared notes and studying tips where I could. I also tutored for a Public Relations class in junior college.

Meet and Greet. Establish rapport. Assess their work. Assess strengths and areas for improvement. Go over assigned work if they are having trouble getting started and discuss a path forward. Goal set and discuss time lines. Ask questions to draw the writer into the process and if necessary, create an outline to get them started. Edit, ask the writer to review and rearrange and then help them further if there is difficulty in knowing how to proceed. Share skills for writing essays, research papers, such as block writing and ways to collect quotes from original material that will make it easier to organize thoughts and points throughout a given paper as well as a record of sources for the bibliography in the format desired by their respective teachers.

I've had the privilege of working with young writers who were passionate about their subject matter. Without the drive or desire to learn you can pour a lot into a student, but ultimately they have to find the drive and push to do the work. I hope to help those finding it hard to find their motivation by tying the subject or skill being learned to the real world as something that will help them be better at whatever they do.

You are where you are and a teacher needs to meet you there. There is no good or bad, there is only the willingness to learn and to build upon where you are at. Everyone is capabable of learning and in fact, because your brain is young and pliable, you are set up for it. You should feel your teacher has your back and is really listening and you are having an exchange. There are no stupid questions. If in doubt always ask, you are learning to become a better communicator in this world, so if at first you are not understood just ask to rephrase your question and begin again.

Children really reflect back to us our own ways of going through the world; it isn't so much what we say, it is what we do. I was feeling frustrated and my son said to me as he stroked my arm, "It's okay sweet pea, you just need to take a break and take three deep breaths." It is something I've done with him numerous times, and he reflected that space and compassion back at me when I needed it too. I showed him what to do in moments like this without instructing him at all. I hope to give a few life skills and mantras for overcoming the things that often distract from the focus needed to complete assignments along the way. Life is what happens when we are making plans.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Self reflect and list some of your strengths thus far and think about those things that you struggle with most. If you have examples, that's even better. Write this down. Everyone has strengths. For example, you may have a grand imagination, but are having trouble putting it down in writing. This is a skill that can be attained with effort. Or for example, you may not know where to start because the information you have feels difficult to organize in a cohesive way. Maybe you struggle with run on sentences. All are skills that can be attained.

I think it is important to discuss pricing with parents to match the need with what they can afford to help their child. It's a difficult time and I know that parents are struggling too.
