About Sierra

In order to learn English faster, people have to be engaged in the language multiple times a week. Sierra is a college student studying Spanish and Finance at the University of Missouri. She is very flexible in her hours and time availability. Because of this, she is able to meet multiple times a week, and students will be able to learn English much faster.

In her college town a year ago, I first began teaching English to refugees from Africa and the Middle East. I immediately fell in love with helping people learn the language that would help them be able to have more opportunities in the United States and be able to simply navigate the culture shock that all of the refugees have felt. I love each victory no matter the size, from learning the letter P to being able to hold a conversation over daily life. I am excited to have these victories with each person I get to help tutor.

I began teaching this past year through a refugee organization called Refugee and Immigration Services in Columbia, Missouri. These refugees are from various countries in Africa and the Middle East.

I have been studying Spanish for 7 years; as I have learned a new language, I have been also been able to see how to teach a language to people.

About the lesson

First, I will assess the level of English that a new student knows. Usually by the first conversation, I can tell where someone is with their English. If a new student is not able to hold a conversation, I will work from being able to say the alphabet, to numbers, to vocabulary, etc. to see where to begin with learning. I also am open to simply asking the new student what they want help with specifically.

I have worked with children from age 8 to adults in their late 50s. Each have been from countries in Africa or the Middle East.

Find a teacher that you feel like you genuinely will like talking with and learning from. It is very easy to become unmotivated when learning a language, but a teacher can change that tremendously.

Recently, I was helping a friend (each person I tutor becomes a friend) of mine who is from the Middle East learn the alphabet. As I was teaching him associated words with the letters, such as girl and woman, he began telling me the words in Arabic. From then on, he teaches me some Arabic for the last 10 to 15 minutes of our lessons.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I would think about these questions:

1.) Why do I want to learn English?

2.) How badly do I want to learn English? How can I keep this motivation?

3.) Where do I need to begin? Or, what do I know already?

Details

Depending on the level of English, pricing will range from $20 to $30 an hour. If a student wants to meet multiple times a week for multiple hours, the pricing will be on the lower range per hour.
