About Katarina

I am currently a cognitive psychology post grad researching second language education. I currently have a bachelor's degree in psychology an philosophy with experience both as a Japanese and English language tutor. I have quite a bit of experience working people of all different backgrounds as I have spent much of my life moving around both within America and internationally. Because of such, I have become skilled in adapting my communication styles to many different cultures and backgrounds. Additionally due to the fact that much of my education has been around how the people learn and develop making me affective at understanding how my students learn and figuring out what techniques help my students learn better.

Much of my work has been in research although I also have experience in tutoring and education. I have found much of my greatest enjoyment in my work has been in understanding something new and then being able to help either peers or students understand the same thing. I find great joy in seeing a little light spark when an idea clicks into place in another person's mind, driving me to want to continue the cycle of understanding and passage of knowledge on.

My earliest experiences in teaching were in elementary school as I often enjoyed volunteering as a tutor for kindergarteners. When I entered high school, I began working as a martial arts assistant instructor in preparation for my black belt examinations and continued working as a martial arts instructor afterwards. Teaching has always been enjoyable for me as I found sharing new things exciting and motivating. Eventually my goal is to continue onto graduate school and become a college professor to allow me to continue teaching and studying what I love.

Much of my training has been in psychology and psychological researcher. I have studied the psychology of learning and language acquisition. I have first hand teaching experiences through my time working as a martial arts instructor as well as aiding students in English education through ESS (English Speaking Society) classes and private settings in my time in Japan. I have also spent the past year as a Japanese language tutor for English speaking college students as well as aid the Japanese language department in cultural education and awareness.

About the lesson

When I work with a new student I like to first to get to know the student and learn how they learn. I want to always adapt how I teach to the individual as I have found everyone has their own methods of learning. Once I have a good sense for how a student learns, I start formulating a lesson plan that adapts over time as the student studies to accommodate both what they are struggling with and what they seem excited about.

I have worked with students of all ages and backgrounds such as elementary school students, high school/middle school students, Japanese college students, and adults/elderly.

Although it is important to find a well qualified and skilled teacher, I personally think the most important thing to find is a teacher that motivates you. In all honesty, if you have a hard time finding passion and motivation for what you are learning, no matter how qualified the teacher is, learning will be much more difficult.

Relatively recently I climbed Mnt. Takamado in Nara, Japan. That day I was just getting out of class in the evening when my friend asked me if I wanted to go to the top of the mountain and watch the sunset. Not really thinking much of it, I decided to spontaneously go. Four of us packed our bags full of snacks and put on coats and hats as evening began to approach. It took us about an hour and a half of exhausted climbing as there was only a very narrow, ungroomed trail that at parts turned into little streams or steep piles of mud and rock.

As I felt myself growing exhausted and weak, my friends, who were all much more experienced in the art of mountain climbing, began to motivate me with ‘ganbatte, katto-chan’ (You got this, Kat) and other inspirational chants. Upon reaching the top of the mountain, we turned around to see the fading red of the sky as it took us too long to reach the top and we missed the sunset. I felt bad as I knew I was the one who slowed down the group, but instead of growing mad at me for my lack of experience my friends found joy in the twinkling lights of the city and stars and began to eat our snacks and dance on the mountaintop.

After we decended in the darkness (which was much easier than going up if you asked me), we found our way into the city and to a curry restaurant as the four of us scarfed down as much Japanese curry as we could to reward our efforts of the day. It became one of my fondest memories in a long list of fond memories I developed over the years.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
One of the big things that is good to think through is what are your personal needs. Teachers and tutors can do a lot to aid you, but the primary part of learning comes from you. Although a good teacher can find what you need without you saying, it is always good to be aware of how you learn, what works best for you, what you like and dislike, etc. before going into a teaching setting. If you can figure those things out, then you’ll be able to learn under almost any setting.
