About Hayley

Hi everyone! My name is Hayley Mays, and I am passionate about education and helping others. I provide students with individualized tutoring instruction that is tailored to best fit their needs and help them reach their goals.

I am a senior at Towson University, majoring in Elementary and Special Education. Over the past several years I have interned in 2nd-4th grade special education academic life skills in ELA, math, and science, 1st & 3rd grade phonics & english, 3rd grade earth science, and 5th grade mathematics. I have taken courses such as Children's Literature, Foundations of Reading, Teaching Math, Curriculum and Instruction for Students with Disabilities PreK-12, and Writing for Elementary Educators.

In high school, I took AP Literature, AP Language, and AP French. I am a very strong writer with course experience regarding the writing process and writing essays.

Education is my passion and I have loved every single moment of interning and seeing students grow and become more independent! I enjoy working with others and helping them re-discover a passion and love for learning! Even virtually, helping students with their education has been extremely rewarding, and I am constantly reminded how excited I am to enter the education field in a few short months!

One of my two younger brothers is diagnosed with several learning disabilities. More often than not, his teachers failed to provide him accommodations and individualization to help him succeed and feel proud of his work throughout elementary school. Seeing his struggle really encouraged me to go into education, so that I can be the teacher that he needed. I started teaching to help students discover their strengths and feel confident in their abilities. The smiles, laughter, and progress I have seen throughout my internships constantly reminds me how excited I am to be a teacher!

I  currently attend Towson University, majoring in Elementary and Special Education.

I just completed a 10 week full-time internship (virtually) in a 2nd-4th grade academic life skills special education class, teaching ELA, math, and science to students with intellectual disabillites varying in needs and levels. I completed an internship in 1st and 3rd grade phonics and ELA, 3rd grade earth science, and 5th grade mathematics

I have taken courses such as Children's Literature, Foundations of Reading, Teaching Math, Curriculum and Instruction for Students with Disabilities PreK-12, Universal Design for Learning, and Writing for Elementary Educators. These courses have provided me with curriculum insight and a wide range of instructional methods to suit each individual learner.

Additionally, I am an undergraduate student research for the Department of Special Education at Towson University. I helped redesign two special education courses to address more instructional methods for pre-service teachers.

I love taking the time to get to know each student, and discover their passions and interests! I also like to identify their preffered learning styles. Using this information, I incorporate it into lessons to engage students and make learning fun. I also start by helping students set goals for themselves and develop an organizational system that works best for them.

I have worked with students of from ages 5-12 with varying needs! Including, but not limited to, general ed elementary school students, nonverbal students, students diagnosed with autism and an intellectual disability, and GT elementary students. I have also worked with middle schoolers and freshmen college students with writing-based courses.

If learning has become more of a chore than exciting, or you feel like you aren't making progress, I am a positive teacher to provide support and apply my course knowledge to help you reach your goals and feel proud about your hardwork!

During my internship, I worked with one student diagnosed with ID and with a lot of behaviors. Virtually learning was extremely difficult for her and her family, and she spent the first 4 weeks constantly dropping to the floor, leaving the table, and screaming. As I gradually took over most teacher responsibilities and began teaching this student, I worked very hard to help her meet her IEP goals and to help bring her back up to the level she was in the classroom in spring. By the end of my rotation, she was staying seated the whole time, clapping when prompted, nodding and shaking her head no, looking at the computer, and using her device with minimal prompting and gestures! I am so incredibly proud of how far she has come and the amount of progress she has made during such an unconventional time.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What subjects do I enjoy learning?

Do I learn better with direct instruction, or through application activites?

Who was my favorite teacher & how did he or she help me learn?

What do I want to accomplish? What goal am I working towards?
