About Ryan

I am a lifelong learner and PhD candidate who loves teaching and helping students meet their goals. I love instilling a love of reading and writing in students. I've been an educator of both high school and college students for almost a decade now and have worked with students of all backgrounds and abilities.

I was inspired to teach from working with my younger brother. He has dyslexia, and I spent many years working with him to help him find success in school. When I finished my undergraduate degree, I began teaching English to share my passion for reading and writing.

I have a Master or Education in Literacy Instruction, six years of experience as a high school English teacher, and two years of experience teaching college undergraduates. I am a PhD candidate at the University of North Texas and have extensive knowledge on teaching and learning.

I start by learning about the student and giving her or him the opportunity to learn a little bit about me. A strong student-teacher relationship is integral for building a solid learning foundation. I ask about their current goals, past history with the subject material, and what they believe they would benefit the most from. I ask to see some samples of their current work to help me understand where they are starting.

I have worked with students from diverse populations. These include students who were eligible for free/reduced lunch, urban/suburban/rural backgrounds, students with learning disabilities, students in need of remedial instruction, students in honors and advanced placement courses, and college undergraduates.

I would advise them to have a clear goal in mind. SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely) goals are an excellent way to make sure that one is working toward clear goals. Do not think that you cannot do something; instead, understand that you cannot do it yet and there are steps you can take to get to that point.

I recently completed a six-day raft trip through the upper portion of the Grand Canyon. It was one of those experiences that makes one feel such a sense of awe and appreciation for the world we live in.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
They should reflect on which steps of a process are most challenging for them and be able to explain where they face obstacles. They should review their work and target a specific aspect that they can ask a question about to receive direct feedback. This is more efficient for the student and the teacher because it will get straight to the skill/ability that the students wants to strengthen.
