About Tisha

My focus when working with students is that they understand the concepts that they are learning. This means that I ask them lots of questions to get at their level of understanding. I also focus on problem-solving so that students will begin to know how to apply their knowledge of numbers and operations.

I love teaching math to kids. While my methods can be new for students at first, I find that they really deepen their learning and appreciation for math.

I have been a classroom teacher for 12 years. I was also the math specialist for the last 2 years.

I have a Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education from Florida A&M University, and Master's degree in Educational Psychology and an Elementary Math Endorsement from Georgia State.

My first step is to give students a developmentally-appropriate word problem. By doing this, I get to see the child's level of problem-solving because I find out how well they understand word problems, the level of their ability to apply their knowledge of operations, as well as their understanding of number patters through their strategy for solving. Then I can begin to make a plan for the direction we will need to go from there.

I have worked with a variety of students. Most recently I have spent a great deal of time working with students who really struggle with math. I work hard to improve both their understanding and enjoyment of math.

Typically I work with elementary students, but I have worked with middle school students as well.
