About Sam
I want to work with you one-on-one to assess your strengths and weaknesses. Math can be scary sometimes, but if we take our time and work on the areas you are struggling with, I hope we can turn those areas into strengths. I really believe you can learn anything.
The best moment is seeing the light bulb go on, when someone not only understands an idea, but is excited about it too. I love to make math fun like an adventure story.
In university, I studied mathematics and philosophy. I have a deep appreciation for understanding the essence of ideas, and then presenting them in their simplest form. When it comes down to it, math uses pure logic and applies it to real world problems.
I am also a mentor for the UC Irvine Math CEO outreach program, a place where middle school students can get early exposure to higher level math concepts, in a fun and relaxed environment. We do our best to have everyone participate and work together, and remind the students it's OKAY not to understand something, encouraging them to ask for help. We want you to succeed!

First, I like to get to know the student a little bit, what are your hobbies/interests, etc. Often I like to use analogies to relate ideas to things that students are interested in to give them concrete examples.
Aside from this, the most important thing is to identify problem areas and work through them immediately. These "snags" can accumulate and cause anxiety/avoidance if not addressed head on. I am here to walk you through wherever you are having trouble!
I have worked with middle school, high school, and college students from different backgrounds. Many did not feel very confident or perhaps seemed overwhelmed by their homework. My goal is always to help you at your pace. Challenging things take time and that's okay.
I would say find someone who is patient and does not worry too much about rushing through material. I do not think this is good for learning, especially something abstract like math. In my opinion, the best math tutors are kind (e.g. khan academy, 3blue1brown, patrickjmt)
On Cinco de Mayo, one of my mentees Joseph sang for us (me and other mentors) a song from his middle school mariachi band at the end of our session. We were are really happy he felt comfortable sharing something he is passionate about.

Super nice, couldn’t be happier. Helped my son with his algebra homework. I have to teach enough with homeschooling lately, let alone math I forgot about 30 years ago. If you’re a frustrated parent, do yourself a favor. Call Sam :)
Sam is the best. He is super friendly and goes through the homework problems I need help on until I feel like I can do it myself. AP calculus feels impossible to understand sometimes, but Sam tried to explain to me how calculus was invented and also how it’s used in the science world. That made it really interesting!
