About Thomas
I’m a friendly, knowledgeable and approachable English tutor with experience teaching, tutoring and mentoring students of all ages. I provide bespoke tutoring programmes for English language and literature from KS2 up to GCSE.
In my sixth form, I ran a weekly after-school Classics Club for KS2 students at Monmouth Boys’ School Prep; I’ve run Oxbridge and university Classics workshops at Monmouth Boys’ School annually since 2014; and last year I worked as a study skills mentor for first-year Classics undergraduates at Cambridge.
A little about me: I’ve just finished a Master’s degree and I’m now studying for the Graduate Diploma in Law. This means I’m constantly learning new material and concepts myself, which makes me more sensitive than ever to students’ needs. I ended up studying Classics at university, but I still love English literature, particularly Shakespeare. I’ve also had real-world experience in English language skills as Editor of the student newspaper Cherwell in 2016.
My own academic success over the years has given me a good deal of insight into what examiners are looking for. At Oxford, I graduated with the highest marks in my year and received a Distinction in my Master’s. Before that, I attained 4 A*s at A Level and 11 at GCSE, scoring full marks in three of my four A2 subjects. I’d put a lot of that success down to revision and exam techniques, and I’m excited to share tips with the next generation of students.
Of course, every student’s needs are different and I offer a tailored approach, starting with a free consultation where I get to know students and discuss their aims. The best learning happens when you’re relaxed, and I offer a friendly, interactive and encouraging tutoring style. I’ve had intensive training in active listening from the University Counselling Service and would be particularly delighted to give tutoring support to students experiencing anxiety, depression, BPD or eating disorders.
I’d also be delighted to provide Latin and Ancient Greek tuition for students of any age or experience level – just get in touch and we can design a programme that suits you.

I found Tom to be a natural, engaging and effective teacher, showing respect for, and a genuine interest in, his pupils. When he was in the sixth form at school, he worked voluntarily running an after school Classics Club for 11 year olds at the prep school of which I was Head at the time. He did this for a little under 2 years. Tom was always totally reliable, punctual and appropriately dressed and he had well-developed social skills. He enjoyed an excellent rapport with his pupils and also got on extremely well with parents and all school staff. The pupils in his care incidentally learned a great deal about the effective use of language. Tom’s skills in spoken and written English are exceptional. Tom always treated his pupils with respect and showed them courtesy and he expected this in return. They rose to that level; Tom was an excellent role model. I have known Tom since he joined prep school and I met him again recently and found him, as expected, a highly personable and capable young man. I recommend him to you wholeheartedly.
Thomas was proactive in approaching his old school to help with Oxbridge Admissions; he organized mock tutorials, practice interviews and feedback sessions. His consummate organisational skills, perceptive, Socratic style of questioning, and his his ability to empathize enabled him to draw the best out of candidates, and he was key in improving the School's success in this area.
