About Zia

Hello, My Name Is Zia. I'm a student at SUNY Purchase in the conservatory of Theater Arts and Literature. I have been tutoring since I was 14 years old giving me 8 years of experience. I currently work in Manhattan as an afterschool activity specialist as the Playwriting instructor, in addition to leading an Introductory Japanese course. While this site does not allow me to offer beginner Japanese lessons, please always reach out if you are interested. I currently teach Middle School (or Junior High), but I have experience working with all age groups. As a student myself, I believe that there is nothing more valuable than a personalized education. I graduated from the Hawthorne Valley Waldorf High School, which is an alternative education system. I believe its personalized approach gave me skills that I would not have otherwise received. I hope to be able to use these skills to provide you with a personalized education experience of your own.

About the lesson

Depending on the student's area of need, the classes will vary greatly. The first class will always begin with a conversation to assess the students' needs. For a Writing Class, we have two options available to us. 1) Writing - This will be about perfecting your skills in spelling, grammar, and written use of the English language. Expanding vocabulary and working on any homework assignments that might need assistance. My editing skills will also always be available to my students for assignments or college applications 2) Creative Writing - This will focus on expanding the student's use of their language to tell a story. We will work with many different models to create pieces of work that go beyond that of a basic assignment. These classes will include looking at famous authors and their techniques, as well as analyzing the students' stories through different lenses. There will be a larger focus on breaking down a story and the steps that go into creating a polished piece. In addition to this, students will receive the proper language, discuss creative literature and analyze it with skill. What this looks like can vary greatly for different age groups, but it is effective at all levels. For reading classes everything will be done on a case-by-case basis, as I have found reading lessons are most effective when made completely personal. The benefit of tutoring is that I, as a teacher, can focus on the needs of one student and customize the lesson to best fit them.
