About Jolene

Hi, I’m Jolene! I’ve been teaching programming for 6 years, and 4 of those have been online. I earned my B.S. in Computer Science from West Virginia University and hold the Python Institute PCAP certification. Before teaching full time, I worked for three years as a software developer at a Charleston company, building Python and JavaScript tools for customer reports. I now teach intro programming part-time at BridgeValley Community and Technical College and help run a free after-school coding club for kids at a local library. I’m proud of an eleven-year-old who made a Scratch game about a mountain bike trail and of an adult learner who built a simple website for her family’s small business. Students tell me I’m patient, friendly and make coding feel doable.

Hello, I’m glad you’re here! Whether you’re brand new to coding or stuck on a school assignment, we’ll start from where you are. I teach Python, JavaScript, HTML/CSS and Java, and I help with school classes, AP Computer Science, college intro courses and personal projects. Younger beginners can start with Scratch. Lessons are live on video with screen sharing, and I’ll never type your code for you. I’ll ask questions and give hints until you find the answer yourself. West Virginia is full of trails and mountains, so our signature project is the Mountain Trail Map Maker. You enter a few hiking trails, their lengths and their climbs, and your program sorts them from easiest to hardest and shows them on a simple web page. After every lesson, you get a Study Playlist with three free tutorials or practice pages that match what we covered. And once a week, I hold a Bring-Your-Own-Problem Hour for any bug that won’t go away. I teach in Eastern Time, with evenings and weekends available. Message me what you’ve tried and what you’d like to make, and I’ll plan your first lesson.
