  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I am a native English speaker and I went to an English boarding school followed by Oxford University (MA -English Language and Literature). I then did two further Masters degrees at top Universities in London. I've been teaching for 18 years.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

Culture is constantly evolving and as it is, to some extent, subjective it is a hard concept to define (also for other reasons). The UK is very multi-cultural and English has been used worldwide... (so, no, I don't think there is a character that is 'the' emblematic representative of the language's culture).
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

I particularly like the word 'malarkey'...
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

My life would be greatly inconvenienced if I couldn't speak English and my opportunities would be more limited if I couldn't speak it fluently and clearly.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

Each student will have their own things that they find difficult. I tailor lessons to help the individual that I'm working with. Obviously having a excellent teacher -(who is well educated, patient, interesting and prepared)- will help students enormously.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

The importance of clear pronunciation was reinforced to me by one of my students who happened to be a part-time Priest (as well a Doctor). He couldn't understand why his congregation kept laughing at him when he asked them to pick up their sheets (in order to sing the next hymn, etc) -turns out he kept asking them to "pick up your shits"!
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

    Three Masters degrees:
MA -English Language and Literature -Oxford University, Pembroke College
MA -European Classical Acting -Drama Centre London, Central Saint Martins, London
MA -TV Journalism -City University, London

18 Years teaching experience -all ages and levels.

    Hundreds of glowing references.

Friendly, patient, well-educated, prepared, interesting teacher and coach.

    I teach:
    English Language, English Literature, EFL, (IELTS, 7+, 11+, GCSE's, A Levels, AS, BA's, MA's, PhD's, etc),
    Received Pronunciation/Standard British English,
    Acting,
    Public Speaking
    and Interview Technique.
Also art classes for kids and air-dry clay groups for all ages.
(I teach online via video calls like Skype or in person in West Dulwich, London).

I also work as a writer and editor.

It is best for students wanting to know more about my experience to see my websites:

    http://www.ClassesEnglish.com

    http://www.ClassesActing.com

    http://www.CoursesPublicSpeaking.com

    http://www.WritersJournalists.com

If students let me know what it is they need and then I can provide more tailored examples as to how my experience relates to their needs. E.g: If a student is studying Shakespeare then it would be relevant for them to know that I have taught Shakespeare for years. I also wrote a dissertation about Shakespeare's works at Oxford University and also studied it during my European Classical Acting Masters degree -in fact we spent 6 weeks studying / performing at Shakespeare's Globe.
