Each child is a unique vessel who needs a secure, caring, and stimulating atmosphere in which to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. As an educator, it is my responsibility to help students meet their fullest potential in these areas by providing a safe space that supports risk-taking, rigor, and invites a sharing of ideas. There are three templars I believe are imperative in establishing such an environment:
(1) the teacher acting as a facilitator of learning ,
(2) allowing the child's natural curiosity to direct his/her learning
(3) promoting respect for all people and communities.
When the teacher's role is to facilitate learning, the primary objective is to provide access to information rather than serving as the primary source of information. The students' goal is to search for knowledge as they navigate through their learning to find answers to their questions. For students to construct a foundation of knowledge, they need a variety of opportunities to discover for themselves and practice skills in authentic situations. Providing students access to hands-on activities, and allowing adequate time and space to use materials that reinforce the lesson being studied creates said opportunities for discovery and construction of knowledge.
I am an English Teacher/Learning Specialist/Entertainer with 10+ years experience in the field of education. I have taught a variety of classes from Hip hop dance to Algebra I and U.S. History.
