Although other cities in the United States might be better known for Boxing, El Paso has had its fair share of success in the sport. El Paso is one of the great fight towns in America and has always supported quality boxing events throughout the years. In the past, both professional boxers Jose Luis Castillo and Diego Corrales have fought in El Paso, due to their endless support of the sport. El Paso has always created a great environment for fights and continues to do so by having one of the best boxing facilities in the world which is the Don Hoskins Center. And this city is also home to a few guys that have come very close to winning world titles such as Fernie Morales and Juan Lazcano. So if you’re thinking about taking on boxing, the city of El Paso, Texas is a great place to start. Boxing is the art of attack and defense using your fists, so you want to make sure you start your training in a place that admires the sport.
The six basic boxing punches are jab, cross, lead hook, rear hook, lead uppercut, and rear uppercut. Although watching a professional boxer as an amateur can be a bit overwhelming, know that they too started by learning these six punches. There is actually a formula to boxing punch numbers 1-6 that makes it easy to remember and create winning combinations. So all even-numbered punches are right-hand punches, and all odd-numbered punches are left-hand punches. In boxing workouts, some trainers might use the count numbers to identify drills, so beginners should memorize these numbers. The key is to get comfortable enough in order to use them properly when training and doing drills. Besides, the best way to train is to train like you’re already a fighter!
Boxing has a lot of golden rules, but the one most trainers will tell you to follow is Rule Number One: Be unpredictable, both on offense and defense. Habits are created from repetition and boxing training is the most repetitive sport on the planet. However, you can’t always let your mind and body go on “auto-pilot” or you’ll become predictable by always throwing the same punch. So don’t allow yourself to just go through the motions, instead mix up your attack and vary your defense skills. You want to keep your opponent and the audience on their toes when it comes to your fighting technique. Another great way to do this is by changing up your lead punch by switching up the intensity that you throw with and the speed. Besides fighting can be unpredictable, no matter how much you train a certain combo it might not be as effective as you thought. Not only do you have to be quick to react physically, but also mentally. With time you’ll learn how to observe your opponent's technique and the situation to make the best decision to ensure a win.
Similar to running, boxers need high-intensity workouts within their routine in order to build their endurance. However, jump rope is also specifically used to train and improve a fighter's footwork. Next time you watch a fighter jump rope in real life or even a movie, take time to notice their technique. A boxer’s skip imitates the footwork a boxer uses in the ring and it’s a great way for them to train for a fight. This is why boxers and professional fighters consider jumping rope an absolute must as part of their training sessions. So they will usually do this for about fifteen minutes as a warm-up, which is split into three rounds of five minutes. And will usually include different variations such as boxer’s skip, crisscross arms, or one leg at a time. Mike Tyson himself always made time to jump rope in order to improve his movement, speed, and coordination, so any boxer should too!
