Learning how to box in Oklahoma City

How many hours a week do boxers train?

There are different training routines and regimes that professional boxers follow to compete in the sport. The general recommendation is for fighters to train between 3 to 5 hours out of 5 days of a week training.

This doesn't mean that boxers have to train 5 hours every day for five days straight. They can have intervals of training some days make it three hours and others do it for five hours.

To become good at something you must work hard but you also need to be kind to your mind and body, especially if you'd like to avoid burnout.

A common workout usually looks like this:

  1. Roadwork (30-60 minutes)
  2. Warm-up (30 minutes)
  3. Bagwork (30-60 minutes)
  4. Focus mitts and/or skill work, drills (30 minutes)
  5. Sparring (30 minutes)
  6. Strength & Conditioning (60 minutes)
  7. Warm-down and crunches (30 minutes)

Keep in mind that the warm-up and warm-down are as important as any other part of training because it allows your body to prepare for hard work and to cool down after the hard work. Warm-ups and warm-downs help avoid cramps and injuries.

Finally, remember to hydrate constantly during any workout and to eat protein for energy and vegetables for fiber. Feeding your body correctly is important if you want to perform better.

What are the 5 benefits of boxing?

There are plenty of great benefits to learning how to box and below you'll find five of the most transcendental.

  1. Confidence booster - as you train you'll start feeling stronger which will help you improve your self-esteem because you'll feel as good as you look. Boxing also teaches you how to defend yourself and your loved ones, you’ll feel more confident and secure as you interact with the world at large, knowing that should any danger arise, you can protect yourself and those you care about from potential threats.
  2. Stress reliever - Boxing training serves as destructive therapy since it provides a safe environment for you to take out your anger and frustration on inanimate things like punching bags. Releasing this energy will help you carry on with your daily activities with less stress or frustration.
  3. Improves cardiovascular health - boxing requires you to move around a lot, whether you are training or boxing in the ring, you keep your body active at all times. This makes boxing an excellent cardiovascular exercise, which doctors recommend everyone should practice to maintain a healthy heart.
  4. Builds strong muscles and bones - while you're training to box you get a full body workout. This means you're not only doing cardio, but you're also working every muscle in your body, and while you make your muscles stronger you help your bones and joints get stronger too.
  5. Improves hand-eye coordination - boxing requires strong visual-motor coordination on your part since you are often performing multiple motions at once. At first, you'll struggle with this, but once you start practicing you'll improve and dominate your hand-eye coordination.

What makes someone good at boxing?

Good boxers have absolute control of their bodies and can focus, measure their energy levels, give strategic punches, and measure their opponent's strengths and weaknesses.

A good boxer has total control of their body, meaning that they are aware of their movements, of their strength, of the strength they need to beat an opponent, and know their limitations. Knowing how far you can go and respecting and honoring your body's limitations will get you a long way.

Focusing is as important as strength because you need to learn from your opponent, from their every move, and their strategy. If you're not focused, you won't have the information which you need to beat anyone at boxing.

Measuring your energy is also important because many boxers go into the ring with high energy levels but lose it quickly. They use up all their energy at the beginning and are left with non by the end of the match, which makes them lose the match. Learning to control your energy is as important as anything else.

Finally, learning what are your opponent's strengths and weaknesses gives any boxer a head start. For instance, if you learn your opponent has weak knees, you can use that against them. Or, if you understand that they have a very good grip, then you won't allow them to use it against you.
