Is boxing worse than football?

Football and ice hockey have higher injury rates in general. Boxers are rewarded for deliberate hits to the head and face, but the power of the hits is not the goal in order to beat one's opponent.

Boxing as a competitive sport is however where you are likely to get some injuries. Warm-up and stretching make it possible to get punched multiple times by your opponent and not sustain injuries. It’s much more about movement control than in the case of football.

In a word, to reach a healthy physical fitness level is necessary. Listen to your body (which getting older usually makes more obligatory), and establish a routine. In English boxing, French Boxing, and Muay Thai you have to be able to rest when necessary. Do not push it too much when you feel the beginning of an injury.

If you live in Houston and want to box recreationally, you are fit to start learning at forty and practice until very old age, basically almost your late seventies! There are many famous boxers who were successful way into their forties. The professional tutor that retired from professional boxing could become your Superprof boxing coach too!

Is boxing good for self-defense?

Boxing is striking-based and is one of the best self-defense techniques. Punching requires a very small space for maneuver, especially in a face-to-face situation. So in real-life situations, it is actually much more applicable than most techniques, with the exception of Jiu-Jitsu (Jiu-jitsu is a grappling-based self-defense technique).

However, try and distinguish a boxing ring from a situation in a public area. De-escalating an attacker is the first right response.

If you find yourself in an unsafe situation, let’s stress that you should avoid physical conflict. A person under influence or with a mental illness may be dangerous. You are tough mentally and don’t want to get in trouble with authorities after getting provoked on the street. If eventually it is a question of safety and you have no other option, boxing may save you or your loved ones.
