Being a poet and what exactly means

How do you start learning poetry?

Learning to write poetry starts with words, their meaning and their sound. Poetry is a lyrical form of literature, and therefore words are carefully chosen for their meaning and the image they bring to mind, as well as for their sound and the rhythm they create when placed against other words. So one of the first things one may have to focus on in order to start learning poetry is to read a lot of poetry. Reading a lot of poetry will get you an idea of what the language of poetry really is. The second thing might just be listening to poetry being recited.

Poetry is musical, and therefore, there is a certain rhythmic flow that needs to come out of your chosen words. This is why listening to poetry recitations can serve you enormously. While doing these two activities, reading and listening, you can start trying to write a few poems. But remember that everybody had to start somewhere, and most likely their first attempts were not their published work, so do not compare what you first write to published pieces of work written by masters. Instead, have fun and try to express your unique voice through poetry.

What qualifications do you need to be a poet?

Let’s not think of it in terms of things you need to study. Sure, someone can say you need a bachelor’s degree in literature to be a poet, or you need a master in creative writing to be a poet. But the truth is that in order to be a poet you need to write poetry and somehow get your poetry to poetry readers. Most likely, if you are passionate about poetry, then you probably are passionate about what makes poetry the art form that it is: language, poetic voice, style, structure and finally content about a truth that had never been expressed before.

So the goal of becoming a poet does not have a concrete path, but more of an uncertain and marvelous journey. If you want to be a poet, then write poetry. Would you like to see if your poetry has an impact on people? You can go to a poetry reciting club or cafe and recite your poetry to people and see what impact it has on them. Would you like to gain notoriety in the poetry world? There are plenty of poetry contests around the world you can apply to and navigate the circuit. It may bring new opportunities and exposition. Becoming a poet, just like in any art form, is a journey with no established road, filled with challenges, uncertainty, and an immense joy.

Can you make a career out of poetry?

As mentioned previously, many poets will attempt to start their careers by sending their poems to poetry competitions. There are also poetry publishers as well as poetry magazines. These are all good actions to take towards the goal of becoming a poet. Some poets, after being published, may gain popularity and an audience. They may have followers and critics. But financially speaking this might not be sufficient.

This is why poets usually work as freelancers or teachers. They can work with musicians, writing songs or helping songwriters with their songs.  Poets can also teach creative writing, poetry workshops and if you have the degrees for it, even teach courses at universities. A career in poetry also means speaking in public, giving speeches at events or being invited to read your poetry for your audience. So there are many things a poet can do with their skill and talent.
