Reading skill grows from a handful of foundational building blocks.

The foundations cover:

• Phonemic awareness means recognizing individual sounds within words. It's the first step toward decoding text.
• Phonics: matching letters and letter combinations to their sounds. This allows readers to decode unfamiliar words.
• Fluency means reading with speed, accuracy, and expression. It frees up mental energy for comprehension.
• Vocabulary and comprehension work together to build meaning from text. Strong word knowledge supports deeper understanding.

Once these basics are mastered, comprehension improves naturally.
