About Michelle
Hi there, my name is Michelle. I'm a multi-faceted professional who's had the privilege of working in a number of different professional spaces including the federal government, tech startups, and research labs. A few years back I decided to merge the skills needed for each of these roles and my certification in English Language Instruction, to fill a growing need in the language and communications space.
MY MOTIVATION:
Thanks to the globalizing trends of our modern world, the need to have qualified professionals who understand a bit about your industry AND the struggles of non-native people trying to communicate via the English language, are few and far between. I know this both from personal experience and the hundreds of people I have worked with - people who are generally employees or contractors of English-speaking companies or people who simply want to advance their career opportunities by improving their language and communication skills. We no longer live in silos. The world is interconnected and so are all the opportunities that can come with this simple fact.
A DEEPER LOOK INTO MY BACKGROUND:
Inside my everyday life, I bounce between three languges. I grew up speaking both English and Mandarin Chinese, and a few years ago, also unintentionally learned how to speak French. Outside of languages, my professional career has spanned a number of different sectors. I've worked for the U.S. Federal Government as a Policy Specialist, been in and out of the startup world as a UX/Product Designer, and have had the pleasure of trying my hand at just about everything in between.
I'm a TEFL-certified (eq. to CELTA Level 5) professional who also holds 2 Bachelor's degrees (one in Biopsychology, the other in Dance Studies), 1 Master's degree (in Biological Neuroscience), and I decided to leave the toxicity of academic research before receiving my Ph.D. I did, however, leave with all my knowledge of scientific writing perfectly intact.

WHAT'S SPECIAL ABOUT ME: I get that most times, you don't see this package of knowledge and skills presented together. That's why I'm here. Too often we have people who just specialize in one thing. English teachers who have never worked outside of "teaching" and will forever call fully grown adults, their "students." Or programmers who can't help but make their emails sound like Slack messages or documentation (no offense to either field, just trying to illustrate a point). With me, you get the integration of all my personal and professional endeavors, and my experience knowing how to target and pinpoint what is needed for the project at hand.
A TYPICAL SESSION: Depends entirely on what you need. No two people are built the same, nor are any two sessions exactly identical. I expect you to come with a clear idea of what you want to work on, and how this will benefit you in the long run. In return, I'm happy to bring my knowledge, skills, and expertise to help you to the best of my ability. I've been in this a while, so I can tell you that MY APPROACH IS BEST SUITED FOR those looking to advance their careers (resumes, interviews, presentations, business communication, etc.) and are frustrated by years spent with teachers overly attached to finding answers in books. You are most likely a High Intermediate or Advanced English speaker who uses the language for work or school. You might be comfortable communicating in informal conversation to get through daily life, but also need some guidance when it comes to "other" things. Or you're just really curious about my approach and want to give this a go.

Details
This rate is for our live session time and based on my many years of experience. I understand that working with someone requires some "feeling out" before committing which is why I offer the 30-min consult to see if we're a good fit. Afterwards, you can trust me to keep an open door with you all through the working process. If either one of us ever feels that it isn't working, we are under no obligation to continue (and no hard feelings so long as respect is maintained).
