About Julia

I’ve been playing piano since the age of 5. As a kid, I didn’t particularly enjoy practicing, and only did so at the instruction of my parents. Everything changed at 15 when I stayed with a host family in France. They had a piano in their home, and for the first time I got to play on my own terms. I realized then how much I loved it! Creating the sounds of familiar music while abroad made me feel at home. Part of the joy became finding pianos everywhere I went - restaurants, lobbies, wineries, book shops. Now, whenever I play, my mind floats away into a rapt state, making all worries melt away.
As far as my background, I took private lessons weekly from age 5 to 18, focusing on classical music, alongside theory courses at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. I received an honorable mention in the “Kids Play the Darnedest Things” piano competition and received 1st place in the Marin County Fair Junior Star Search Piano Contest. At 17, I attended the California State Summer School for the Arts where I played in an ensemble and further honed my musical abilities. As a graduate student, I acquired my own upright piano (his name is Moby). Since then, I have been performing locally, teaching, and playing for leisure. I'm also a member of the TVFMC - Treasure Valley Federated Music Club - which means as my student, you are eligible to participate in recitals and competitions hosted by the FMC.
My favorite composers include Rachmaninoff, Chopin, Liszt, Mendelssohn, Jean Sibelius, Emile Pandlfi, Peter Gregson...
Throughout my childhood, my parents always said, “One day you’ll thank us for signing you up for piano.” Today, I do thank them, and hope to pass along this treasured skill.

About the lesson

I help you discover piano through several angles - sheet music, rhythm, theory, musicality (e.g. phrasing, dynamics), and of course the foundations such as scales and chords. We will play fun little duets together that require little expertise on your end but still allow you to create gratifying music right from the start. We'll also cover specific techniques and exercises that allow you to tackle any piece, no matter how challenging. My goal is to break it down so that learning music is enjoyable and rewarding rather than stressful. Lessons are catered to whatever your personal goal is - whether it is playing your favorite songs to sing along to, or memorizing a complex classical piece.

She is very patient and finds clever allegories to explain sometimes complicated technical musical nuances in a digestible way. Julia's creativity helps in keeping even her youngest students engaged throughout each lesson. She is genuinely interested in the progress of her pupils and makes sure to emphasize every achievement big or small.
