About Julia
I’ve been playing the piano for 25 years now. As a kid, I didn’t particularly enjoy practicing, and only did so when my parents nudged me. At age 15, I lived in France for several months with a host family. Throughout that period, playing piano made me feel at home, and being able to play on my own terms without any external pressure made me realize I wholeheartedly loved it. Everywhere I went, I found a piano to play. In restaurants, hotel lobbies, wineries, book shops, people’s homes. Between the ages of 5 and 18 I took private lessons weekly, focusing on classical music, alongside music theory courses at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. I received an honorable mention in the “Kids Play the Darnedest Things” piano competition and received 1st place in the Marin County Fair Junior Star Search Piano Contest multiple years in a row. At 17, I attended the California State Summer School for the Arts where I played in an ensemble and further honed my musical abilities. As a graduate student, I acquired my own upright piano (his name is Moby). Since then, I’ve been playing for leisure. My favorite composers include Rachmaninoff, Chopin, Einaudi, Liszt, and Debussy. Throughout my childhood, my parents always said, “One day you’ll thank us for signing you up for piano lessons.” Today, I thank them, and look forward to sharing this gift with others.

I help you learn piano through several angles - reading sheet music, understanding rhythms and counting, music theory, dynamics, phrasing, etc. We will go through specific techniques and finger exercises that will allow you to tackle any piece, no matter how challenging. My goal is to break it down for you so that learning music is enjoyable and rewarding rather than stressful. Lessons will be catered to whatever your personal goal is - whether it is playing your favorite songs to sing along to, or memorizing a long classical piece to perform.

Julia is a very talented teacher! Literally anyone can learn playing piano with her. Even if you don't believe you can, she finds ways to unlock your musical abilities. Plus she is just a very nice person
Julia is a very talented musician and a brilliant teacher. She has a unique approach to every student based on their level and musical interests. She is very patient and finds clever allegories to explain sometimes complicated technical musical nuances in a digestible way. Julia's creativity helps in keeping even her youngest students engaged throughout each lesson. She is genuinely interested in the progress of her pupils and makes sure to emphasize every achievement big or small. It's incredible that with only one lesson per week, her students with 0 prior experience can play decent classical pieces in just a few months!
