About Erik

Online only · Moscow time (UTC+3) · lessons in English or Russian

My name is Erik Markovskii — percussionist, composer and teacher with more than 15 years of teaching and over 1,000 students, adults and children. My djembe style is a fusion: traditional African rhythms mixed with ideas from many other traditions and modern groove.

I'm the founder of the world fusion ensemble Tuuli, so building grooves that work with other musicians is part of my everyday playing — and that's what I teach.

Background: a degree in psychology and education, 20 years on stage, and theatre music nominated for the Golden Mask, Russia's national theatre award (Best Composer).

About the lesson

Who it's for:
• Complete beginners and children from 7
• Drummers and percussionists who want a strong hand-drum groove
• Singers, guitarists and bands who need a solid accompaniment

What we work on:
• The three core sounds: bass, tone and slap — clean and relaxed
• Traditional African rhythms and how the parts fit together
• Fusion: mixing djembe with grooves from other traditions
• Modern groove and accompanying songs
• Playing in a group: your part, breaks and dynamics
• Cajón: grooves and accompaniment

Format: individual 60-minute lessons on Zoom, in English or Russian. I'll help you choose your first drum if you need one.

Free first lesson — 30 minutes. We'll play together, and you'll leave with exercises you can practise on your own.
