About Jason

I hold a master degree in linguistics from George Mason University, a bachelor degree in French - minor in Spanish - from Michigan State University, and a Certificate in Arabic Studies from the Defense Language Institute (Presidio of Monterey, U.S. Army).

I have participated in training from the Highlands Latin School in Louisville, KY as part of their teacher training summer conferences.

My professional experience in various roles in the language industry is both broad and deep: I served five years active duty in the U.S. Army (98G Arabic linguist); I served six years in the CIA working primarily open source intel and middle eastern issues; several years working due diligence research; and I continue to translate professionally (three of my book translations have been published). I currently teach Latin and literature at two classical education venues.

I generally recommend a classical approach to language learning: recitation of forms and grammar, written and verbal exercises, and (for modern languages) copious reading and listening. I also believe strongly in the story-learning method of teaching languages. I am open, however, to using client-suggested textbooks, especially if this helps the student/client stay motivated!

I myself am a polyglot and a committed learner of languages. I bring that passion to the tutoring session and classroom. But more than my extensive professional experience in the field, more than my formal educational background, is my enthusiasm for teaching languages; that, ultimately, is what my clients benefit most from.

My students generally range from middle school to high school, but I heartily welcome adult and life-long learners as well.
